Grow Local Grow Equal
Supported by the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity, Grow Local, Grow Equal project explores the dynamics of the Turkish music industry and address the systemic factors that create inequality. The project carries out research, training programs, and industry meetings to better understand the sector’s vulnerabilities, strengthen artists’ rights, and support the development of sustainable cultural policies.
The report “Grow Local, Grow Equal: Status of the Musician in Türkiye” examines structural challenges, gender-based inequalities, and regional disparities, drawing on the experiences of musicians, venue and studio owners, and other industry stakeholders. Conducted with the support of the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity, the research included fieldwork in Ankara, Diyarbakır, Istanbul, and Izmir, in-depth interviews with 48 individuals, an online survey with 371 participants, and roundtable discussions with 107 industry representatives. The report offers a multi-layered view of both live and recorded music ecosystems and provides practical recommendations for creating a more equitable and sustainable music policy. It is one of the most comprehensive studies on Turkey’s music industry and can be accessed via the link below.
